Peter Johnson

Peter Johnson has been a golf professional in Wales for 40 years. He was a golf professional at Cardiff Golf Club for 23 years and initiated the development of the Vale of Glamorgan Golf Club in 1992 following his successful development of St. Marys Golf Club.

Both the Vale and St. Marys Golf Clubs were started by Peter as green field sites and he was responsible for achieving the planning, design and construction of the golf courses as well as putting the infrastructure in place to create the smooth running of both clubs. Two years after starting the Vale Peter subsequently sold most of his shares.

He has been involved in all aspects of the game including course design, coaching and organising golf events such as the Welsh Professional Championships. Peter has been involved in designing courses in Wales for the past 20 years including Carmarthen, St. Marys at Pencoed, The Lake and the Wales National at the Vale of Glamorgan. Peter acted as a consultant for ADAS Wales and was involved in the design and upgrading of several courses as well as a number of feasability studies in Wales, the UK, Europe and Africa.

Peter has commentated on golf events for the BBC  for many years including the Welsh Professional Championships as well as the Welsh Rugby Union Pro Ams. He was recently interviewed by Sky Sports on golf in Wales and asked for his views on the build up to the 2010 Ryder Cup and what is involved in raising the standards of Golf in Wales.

As past Chairman of the Welsh Professional Golfers Association (currently Vice Chairman) and past Chairman of the Professional Golfers Association, Peter has developed an unrivalled reputation for knowledge of golf especially in Wales.

He is currently an official coach to the Glamorgan County Golf Union, the Welsh Golfing Union and the South Wales Girls Association. In conjunction with Mr Ian Hughes (Past President of the Welsh Golfing Union) he was responsible for drawing up the blue print for coaching in Wales which is still followed today. Peter has been personal coach to many Welsh golfers including Ryder Cup star Philip Price, European Tour players Steve Dodd and Bradley Dredge and his own son Richard Johnson who is a two times winner on the US Tour.

During the past 25 years Peter has been coach to over 30 amateur internationals and was responsible for coaching 5 out of the 6 man team that won Wales' first ever major event, the 1995 European Team Championships.
